While the trade name blue quartz usually refers to pieces colored by blue mineral inclusions like dumortierite, this Madagascan material is structurally colored instead.  It looks orange in transmitted light (backlit) but blue in reflected light (under a light source).  Some pieces have a floating blue and golden glow that stays in place when turned.  These colors are created by the Rayleigh scattering of light on microscopic inclusions.  Only a very small amount of Madagascan girasol quartz and rose quartz is tinted blue to bluish gray.
