The 8th vein of Ocean Jasper is the most recent vein of Ocean Jasper and the most colorful vein. Pieces from the 8th vein were released in January of 2022. Ocean Jasper is a rare material as it is only found in two areas of Northwestern Madagascar. One of the mines can only be reached by boat and at low tide. The previous veins found have been small, from my understanding they are not sure how much will be available. This vein in particular has incredible bullseye and orbicular patterning with stunning colors (the most notable being the blues). This higher quality will also contain white or green druse on some pieces.

Ocean Jasper® is a trademarked name for a multicolored stone from Madagascar, typically with spherical patterning. Although commonly described as an orbicular jasper, the most recent research suggests it is the mineral chalcedony instead. Some pieces have agate banding or druses of clear quartz, a coating of tiny crystals, known more commonly as “druzy”.

The variety of quartz known as chalcedony is often unfamiliar to people. It is actually the mother stone of many semiprecious gems: banded chalcedony is better known as agate, red as carnelian, and black as onyx, etc. Its capacity to transmit light is a characteristic of chalcedony. By definition jasper is not translucent, unless cut extremely thin. (Information from Enter The Earth)

The colours are caused by various mineral inclusions.  Red comes from iron in the form of hematite, yellow or grey is clay and shades of brown tend to come from goethite.

Ocean jasper is a registered trade name for what is now known to be a spherulitic chalcedony.  Chalcedony is a cryptocrystalline variety of quartz.  Cryptocrystalline means its crystals are too small to be seen with the naked eye.

A spherulite is a small rounded body often with a radiating structure made up of fibrous needle-shaped crystals.  They mostly occur in vitreous volcanic rocks.  The greyish white inclusions in snowflake obsidian are spherulites.  In ocean jasper the spherulites sit between grains of chalcedony and quartz.

**How are the workers at the Ocean JasperTM mine treated?

Enter the Earth covers all the expenses at the mine, including housing and food. Miners work Monday through Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to avoid the heat of the day. (They do not work on Thursdays for cultural reasons.) Additionally, we observe many American pay practices there like holiday pay, overtime pay, and goal based bonuses.

We provide tools and personal protective equipment (PPE) to protect against injury while mining and breaking or moving rough rock. This includes but is not limited to goggles, hard hats, reflective safety clothing, gloves, steel toed boots, and particle filtering masks.
